Fernanda Morales This is me… And that’s the funny face I make when I take a picture.

So, I think my journey with photography has been a really intense one. I love creating images, still and moving. Photography is a part of my daily life. As for showing my work, well, I’ve always been very self -conscious about it. I think this blog is a very nice and relaxed way to get rid of those demons.————————————————————————————————

Foto del día 24-02-2012 a la(s) 16_00My approach with photography has been very intimate and ludic. Since I am not a professional photographer, my story is the typical one: it all started with taking family portraits, pictures of my travels and beloveds. Because, I doubted my own memory and wanted to make some special moments last forever. Later I found Martin Parr, his work inspired me for letting go and embrace the irony behind daily life situations.

I’m a native Texan but I try to travel as much as possible and will be teaching English in Thailand this summer. My journey in photography really started a couple years ago when I took a photo class in college. I could spend hours in the darkroom developing and printing photos. Ever since, I’ve been shooting mainly 35mm film photos because I feel like that is the best way for me to express myself and I’m in love with the way film looks! I’d say my favorite subjects are women, nature, my travels and I love doing double exposures. ______________________________________________________________________

It´s the details that compose everything; as a young girl, I discovered in photography clues of what we are. What complements us, what we are made of: the past, moments, memories. I document what attracts me, capturing what captures me, catching in an image what catches me. I really enjoy it.__________________________________________________________

My journey with photography really started a few years ago when my dad gave me his Nikon DSLR when he retired and didn’t need the camera anymore for his surveying work. I had no idea how to use it at first so just started off with a trial and error approach and would ask to do little photo shoots with my friends. I then took a class about how to properly take pictures and to understand basic camera components. I later took a little workshop on lighting. I have always loved meeting new people and being creative. I took painting courses in Vancouver and in San Miguel de Allende and always found myself painting people. Photography allowed me to get a creative image done quicker than a painting, and my painting background helped my understand color and composition with photography. I think my favourite subject matter will always be people and portraits. I especially like shooting beautiful women. After using the DSLR for a few years, I mainly shoot with film now, and absolutely am in love with the way film looks.

I’ve been on this photography journey for quite a while now. I’ve been trying to figure out how to open myself up to the world and show my work because showing it has always been hard for me maybe because of the fear of criticism.

I took my first class in high school. I made pinhole cameras, developed my own images in a darkroom and learned about developing and printing. I loved being in the darkroom, printing. Time would fly by and I was always fascinated to see how images appeared right before my eyes. I still remember how the chemicals smelled.

My dad gave me my first Nikon Fm10 all manual 35mm film camera. At the beginning I would always be searching for the weirdest things and people to capture. Just because it made me think about how they turned out like that or their history. Something that just fascinated me.

Later on I joined a project where I had to photograph the elderly and children with disabilities. This was very dificult for me and broke my heart. After this I switched to fashion photography. I know, quite a shift there. But I was trying to find my passion. I took some photos for fashion designers and for a couple of magazines. It was fun for a while, but then I lost interest.

It wasn´t until I remembered a trip I took to the beach in Oaxaca, where I would photograph the natives, that I realized that what I really wanted to photograph were people an their lifestyles.

Then I met a boy who was also a photographer that actually went to the same school that I did, and went on a trip to India and the magic came back! Photographing people in their environment, different cultures, different places. This just filled my heart and soul with joy!

IMG_0314 “Beauty from ashes.” That kind of sums up my journey with photography. Starting at age 6 right up until yesterday, I have made so many mistakes with photography. Each mistake brings with it an opportunity to learn and to, hopefully, create better pictures in the future. Here are some of my “ashes”: cutting peoples’ heads out of the pictures, overexposure, underexposure, dark room mistakes, film mistakes, and the list goes on. I will gladly take the beauty that has resulted: pictures of strangers that agreed to let me capture them, photographs of nature that could never do justice to the real thing, fun photo shoots with my sister, other family members and clients, travel photography, random things I come across that make me think “I just have to get a photograph of that!” To me, there’s nothing more satisfying than finding a beautiful photograph, or two, or more within a series. I hope you enjoy some of my work!

_____________________________________________________________________________

20150520_164854My interest in Photography started when I was a young girl about 13 years old. I was given my first camera for a school field trip to Washington D.C.I will never forget, it was a black Kodak Ektramax 110 with a flash, a sleek looking camera for that time period.  I was very excited to use it and took all kinds of pictures.  Looking back through the photos I took on that trip it was apparent that many different things caught my eye. As time went by I continued taking photos but never really thought to go to school or get some sort of formal training. I just took pictures whenever I had the chance.  Then 15 years ago I moved back to San Antonio and reconnected with one of my hobbies; wrestling. In Texas, wrestling has always been  very popular and I just loved everything about it.  I loved watching the wrestlers as they squared off with each other in the ring. Some were so graceful and others downright brash. They exhibited great athletic ability and were so entertaining.  So I attended every show I could with my camera in hand, always searching for “the shot”.  And from there my passion for Photography was reignited. I started taking pictures of anything and everything I thought was interesting and beautiful. I still have no formal training other than  reading articles, watching instructional videos and getting tips from a few friends who are photographers. But now feel more aware of what I am doing with my camera.  Whenver I felt my abilities had improved I would get enough courage to volunteer to take pictures for my family and friends at their special events. Sometimes the photos came out great and while others presented the opportunity to learn from my mistakes.  Taking pictures is very personal to me and I love to capture moments in life. It is my hope that the photos I take speak to your heart, inspire you and allow you to see there is beauty in even the simplest of things.

I remember when I was very young I would climb up to the rooftop of my house and I would photograph the sky. I would find different shapes and wonderful creatures and, I would photograph them. I would use up rolls and rolls of filmon these cloud formations and I would write down on my notebook the number of picture and the image I saw.

When I was 15 years old I discovered the developing process, I recall the first photograph someone took of me with a pinhole camera, this process amazed me! There is where my passion began!

And then I discovered the dark room, the developing process, that peculiar smell of the chemicals which made me fall in love. Since then I would spend any free time I had in the dark room, developing, experimenting, duplicating and inspiring me even more to explore new techniques. Later on, I taught a pinhole camera workshop for children, I wanted to share that fascination which I had encountered. Throughout the years I have left aside my passion for working in the dark room however, I haven’t left aside my passion for photography. It is still alive and today more than ever, through my most precious sense, I seek to express and share even more of myself!
